John 1

1 ^aIn the beginning was ^bthe Word, and the Word was ^cwith God, and ^dthe Word was God. 2 ^{▼▼Lit This one}He was in the beginning with God. 3 ^fAll things came into being through Him, and apart from Him ^{▼▼One early ms nothing came into}not even one thing came into being that has come into being. 4 ^hIn Him was life, and the life was ⁱthe Light of mankind. 5 And ^jthe Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not ^{▼▼Or overpower}grasp it.

The Witness John the Baptist

6 A man ^{▼▼Or came into being}came, one sent from God, and his name was ^mJohn. 7 ^{▼▼Lit This one}He came ^{▼▼Lit for testimony
,} ^pas a witness, to testify about the Light, ^qso that all might believe through him. 8 ^{▼▼Lit That one; i.e., John
,} ^sHe was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

9 ^{▼▼I.e., the Word, Christ} This was ^uthe true Light ^{▼▼Or that enlightens every person coming into the world}that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. 10 He was in the world, and ^wthe world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not ^{▼▼Or acknowledge}know Him. 11 He came to His ^{▼▼Or own things, possessions, domain}own, and His own people did not ^{▼▼Or receive}accept Him. 12 But ^{▼▼Or all who received}as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become ^abchildren of God, ^acto those who ^{▼▼Or trust in}believe in His name, 13 ^aewho were ^{▼▼Or fathered}born, not of ^{▼▼Lit bloods}blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.

The Word Made Flesh

14 And ^ahthe Word ^aibecame flesh, and ^ajdwelt among us; and ^akwe saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of ^algrace and ^amtruth. 15 John * ^antestified about Him and called out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘ ^aoHe who is coming after me has proved to be ^{▼▼Lit before me}my superior, ^aqbecause He existed before me.’” 16 For of His ^arfullness ^{▼▼Lit we all received}we have all received, and ^{▼▼Lit grace for grace}grace upon grace. 17 For ^authe Law was given through Moses; ^avgrace and ^awtruth ^{▼▼Lit came to be}were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 ^ayNo one has seen God at any time; ^azGod the only Son, who is ^bain the ^{▼▼Lit chest; or possibly lap}arms of the Father, ^bcHe has ^{▼▼I.e., given a detailed account of}explained Him.

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 This is ^bethe testimony of John, when ^bfthe Jews sent priests and Levites to him ^bgfrom Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 And he confessed and did not deny; and this is what he confessed: “ ^bhI am not the ^{▼▼I.e., Messiah}Christ.” 21 And so they asked him, “What then? Are you ^bjElijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you ^bkthe Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am ^blthe voice of one calling ^{▼▼Or out, In the wilderness make the way} out in the wilderness, ‘Make the way of the Lord straight,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24 And the messengers had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the ^{▼▼I.e., Messiah}Christ, nor Elijah, nor ^bothe Prophet?” 26 John answered them, saying, “ ^bpI baptize ^{▼▼The Gr here can be translated in, with, or by}in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27 It is ^brHe who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy even to untie the ^bsstrap of His sandal.” 28 These things took place in Bethany ^btbeyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing people.

29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him, and *said, “Behold, ^buthe Lamb of God who ^bvtakes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He in behalf of whom I said, ‘ ^bwAfter me is coming a Man who has proved to be ^{▼▼Lit before me}my superior, ^bybecause He existed before me.’ 31 And I did not recognize ^{▼▼I.e., as the Messiah}Him, but so that He would be revealed to Israel, I came baptizing ^{▼▼The Gr here can be translated in, with, or by}in water.” 32 And John ^cbtestified, saying, “ ^ccI have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 And I did not recognize ^{▼▼I.e., as the Messiah}Him, but He who sent me to baptize ^{▼▼The Gr here can be translated in, with, or by}in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, ^cfthis is the One who baptizes ^{▼▼The Gr here can be translated in, with, or by}in the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I myself have seen, and have testified that this is ^chthe ^{▼▼One early ms Chosen One of}Son of God.”

Jesus’ Public Ministry; First Converts

35 Again ^cjthe next day John was standing ^{▼▼Lit and}with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, ^clthe Lamb of God!” 37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, “What are you seeking?” They said to Him, “ ^cmRabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39 He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day; it was about the ^{▼▼I.e., about 4 p.m.}tenth hour. 40 ^coOne of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first *found his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the ^cpMessiah” (which translated means ^{▼▼Gr Anointed One}Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of ^{▼▼Gr Joannes
,} ^csJohn; you shall be called ^ctCephas” (which is translated ^{▼▼I.e., Rock or Stone in Gr

43 ^cwThe next day He ^{▼▼Or resolved}decided to go to ^cyGalilee, and He *found ^czPhilip. And Jesus *said to him, “ ^daFollow Me.” 44 Now ^dbPhilip was from ^dcBethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 ^ddPhilip *found ^deNathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom ^dfMoses wrote in the Law, and ^dgthe prophets also wrote: Jesus ^dhthe son of Joseph, from ^diNazareth!” 46 Nathanael said to him, “ ^djCan anything good be from Nazareth?” ^dkPhilip *said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Here is truly an ^dlIsraelite, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before ^dmPhilip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered Him, “ ^dnRabbi, You are ^dothe Son of God; You are the ^dpKing of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see ^dqheaven opened and ^drthe angels of God ascending and descending on ^dsthe Son of Man.”
